RCCC Officers Election
«
on:
January 26, 2010, 07:12:02 PM »
I'm surprised that there hasn't been a thread started already regarding the forthcoming RCCC Office Bearer's election. I would have thought that there would be loads of candidates vying with one another to be the ones to sort them out.

The Board if you can afford the money and the aggro.
The ASC if you can afford the money and have the time to waste.

Yes, it would seem that most people prefer the easy option of yelling abuse from the sidelines rather than getting involved and doing something positive about what they perceive to be wrong.

depends on whether you fancy banging your head against a brick wall or not - you would need to think you had the chance to change things but as a newcomer to the clique and one person of six established HHY,s- that would be unlikely

I have to agree with DA on this one. I have never met any coucil member who did not have the best intersts of curling at heart. The difficulty is the actual structure of your governing body and world curling, and changing that is the difficult thing. One man one vote may be a step in the right diresction but only if the focus of curling can be taken back to the domestic game and away from international curling. This needs leadership from the wcf and ecf which frankly will not be forthcoming... too much money at stake. As long as pressure exists to produce olympic medals the domestic game is going to suffer everywhere. It will take a very brave major governing body to bring that about. Well done to the swiss BUT they are under increasing pressure too to accommodate the great medal hunt.

Well, one things for sure. If nobody tries it ain't going to happen.
Without a reformist on the inside, all the yah-boos in the world on an internet message board isn't going to change a thing.

Like JJK and Sandy I've been there but disagree with JJk in that things can change. However once on the ruling body you 'work' within it to try and change things. Like all politics you have to lobby and work on getting people to see your point of view.
We need some younger blood on the RCCC body. I gather it now only requires 4 or 5 meetings a year, excluding committee work. In the past there were at least 11 monthly meetings plus upto 9 committee meetings depending on which committee.
Now a days the use of mobiles and especially the internet should decrease the need for certain meetings. So much so a committee could meet for short time before one of the Council (or what ever it is called) meetings to vote and confirm.
On of my convenors stated his best committee consisted of one! But in fact he utilised three and the phone and had one of the most efficient and effective years for RCCC compertition.
Lets get someone from this Forum on board.

Let's get someone from this Forum on board.
Dunoonrock, therein may lie a problem. If some one who frequents this forum was to be elected to a position within the RCCC there would clearly be confidential matters which should not be discussed here. There would be matters of policy and decision making processes, again, not for discussion here, but the individual would still have personal views. How would he separate them from his RCCC position. Could he make his contributions here without them being taken by other forum members as the "official" RCCC policy?

As you well know, many have tried and many are still trying. It is my experience that it is the Board of the RCCC who is failing their members by dismissing the very people who are trying very hard and who certainly can make a difference. It is a closed shop, and while the individuals within it might not be to blame, the result of their combined actions is prohibitive, secretive and usually detrimental to progress.

JM How can the RCCC fail its members if it has a democratic eletion. Now the members have their say as one man one vote. But even before the members could have lobbied or put pressure on their Reps to change things. But appathy takes over and most as usual are only interested in their next club game -- What arfe the Olympics.
For those elected it is still up to them to work and change things. when they get into the RCCC. Unfortunately there will still be some that just want election to get a Blazer badge if that is still done.
But like everything get involved even at the lowest level and try working to change. We all have to start somewhere. It is just too easy to girn on this Forum and do nothing else and expect ones views to be taken up as a new policy.
Put yoursekf forward for election and get elected!

I spent many years battling at the lowest level and even managed to get a bit higher up. All my efforts were eventually scuppered, not because the ideas were bad but because the governing bodies wanted control so badly, they would not even consider change. If I mentioned anything at a meeting (supported by my ice-making colleagues) there was always a murmured unease, and nothing was noted in the minutes. This is a very sick democracy you're referring to, but ever the optimist I hope some progress does result.

That's a pretty sure fire way of making sure that nothing changes.
Until a few years ago, Rugby in Scotland had a similar problem with the SRU. They actually managed to change things with a palace revolt that came from within, and the whole structure of the SRU was changed. Now, I'm not claiming that the current SRU are a perfect example of a governing body, far from it, but the experience shows that the blazerati can be overthrown if people actually do something other than post anonymously on message boards.

Now, it is not my real intention of ditching the RCCC, it is necessary for the functioning of Curling in Scotland.
However I do think that the RCCC may have become a "self laudatory" Organisation that is more about seeking transitory glory than promoting the desires of the Rank & File Curler.
I know that they find this Forum annoying, and require that their Staff do not partake, but we do tease out a few truths and demonstrate the feelings of a small contingent of the Hoi Polloi.
Like the
http://www.curlingzone.com/forums/
, we air our thoughts and feelings as one would with friends at a Dinner Party, or similar social gathering. Not a place for placating tired Officials, but of telling things as we see them.
Very few people holding down full time Jobs have the time to take an active part in the Organisation of the RCCC, so we must rely on those that have retired to do it for us. Many of them have had very successful business careers, so have all the necessary abilities. They must tease out the wishes of the amateur Curler, set the world to rights, not be dazzled by the Blazer and settling down into what has become something a sinecure, which may have been what has happened in the past few years.
