People will bet on anything. If they ban alcohol from curling, they will have to ban betting as well. It corrupts the nation and bankrupts families, it is a curse and an evil, it makes one lucky man rich with the hard-earned pennies of a hundred others.
Ban betting! Ban booze! Ban swearing! Ban people! Ban curling! Ban everything and see what sad mess remains!

There used to be a lot of sidebets on competitions like the Scottish Championships back in the old days when men were men and sheep walked the hills in fear and trembling.  A lot of the old guys are long gone but I suspect it still goes on from time to time.  The Calcutta at the Masters is, I suppose, a bet.
I remember once being accosted (in a friendly way!) by one of the old-timers and just about squelched against the nearest wall because we had lost a game at the last stone that he had bet on us winning.  Apparently, we had cost him a lot of money.  Cost us a fair bit too, mind you - it was the final of the Scottish Championship!!

Hi Jim,
T'was me that posted this  on the English curling forum.

The site in question is betfair, a huge betting exchange, and they have all sorts of speciality bets, never mind just sport!
Big Brother for example is a massive betting market.

I think for the Europeans and Worlds, we should definitely organise a lobby of requests to them.
Because they make money on commissions between 2 bettors, they do not care what the market is, as long as it actually exists, and I can see no reason why they wouldn't form a market for curling.

Think of all those people using the site who have never thought of curling, and may research the sport!

Obviously this kind of idea is the type of thng we look at here in England to keep the fledgling game developping, but it would help Scottish curling too!

Not that I shall myself . Too miserable.

Betting gets into the Press.
Betting gets outsiders interested.
Betting gets spotty teenagers interested (They've got to do something, against the rules, in break time).
Betting gets people to watch.
Betting might even, eventually attract the TV.

Betting must not be allowed by any involved personnel, Players, attending Officials etcetera, on pain of a lifetime Ban.

Betfair had betting on the worlds?
That's interesting, must get in touch to make sure they do it again, and for the Europeans, the mixed is only around the corner now..

I think this is a great idea,

People are able to bet on the majority of other sports, so why not curling!

Curling would benefit from betting as there would be more interest worldwide which would possibly bring more investment into curling from bigger sponsors.  With the wider interest in curling numbers of curlers would dramatically increase and everyone would be onto a winner!! Grin
