Was wondering if there was any news on the Dumfries Curling Club, the last i heard they got the go ahead to build six sheets on the indoor bowling rink but I havent seen anything else, will the club be ready to curl this season?

The work has started to convert the bowling hall into an ice rink, don't know if it is on target or not. 

Given that the Ice bowl lost £600k last year and is costing £2million to convert does seem excessive in this current climate.  This is a council run facility and last week the council announced it had to save £50 million over the next 3 years.  Given that I would say whole departments will be closed/cut back and service cut so to be spending money on an ice rink may prove to be foley.

Don't want to be pedantic, but Dumfries Curling Club is doing fine, although we prefer to hire the ice the same as other clubs do. The new rink at Dumfries IceBowl is under construction, mainly due to the need to replace the gas, which was becoming illegal, as Lockerbie did last year.
Surprise, surprise, the project is behind schedule, no curling before 25th October at the moment, but as they have a National Skating Championship the previous week, I am sure we can depend on it being completed by then, and I am sure it will be as big a success as the council's last big project, DG1

Redhammer - point taken Dfs curling club is doing fine but the ice bowl is not, loosing £1.9 million over the last 5 years, money that has come from the Council tax payers of the region.

Given the £50 million cuts announced last week by the Council Chief Executive and the priority list that he published it is hard to see the that level of subsidy continuing over the next few years.

Not glasses I need just type too fast!

Anyone that has had a eye test recently at any of the opticians in Scotland should have had it for free as they are all subsidised! Although like free bus passes & cheap prescriptions will have to be looked at when the Government realise they can not afford it all.

It would seem crazy to spend £2 million on a new facility and then close it down due to running costs. But then the attitude of cuts and closing facilities which take people off the streets and keep them healthy seems to be growing.

On a shopping expedition to Dumfries today, I took a spin past the Ice Bowl. The place is completely cordoned off to the public, but, to judge from all the contractors' vehicles on site, work is certainly proceeding!
