Going back to an earlier post about being willing to pay "ice money" (regardless of the missing millions
) - i am pretty sure every player would be willing to pay a tenner to cover costs. If lake of menteith seems to be the furthest on and if temps kept to the forecast and is playable NOW - ie no more hard frost required , just no thaw to knacker things (rather than waiting on further hard frost for loch leven or piperdam) then give the local community £20,000 (2000 curlers at £10) to bribe them and get on with it!
I cant see the local hotels and businesses turning down the extra business and publicity and chuck the farmer 10 grand for the use of the loch and fields, tell nick nairn he can supply a telly crew, run a park and ride from the old kildean market at stirling to keep the cops happy and away you go.......
by the way - local agricultural shows around the country cope with logistics for far larger crowds than the grand match would draw and there is no issues with traffic etc - Fife show for instance draws a crowd of 9,000 and is run by a local committee - surely the Rccc could cope also?
If there is a will there is a way !!!

From an earlier post - does anyone know who is the convenor of the Grand Match Committee? I've scoured the last Annual and the website and can find nothing - bit sad since I was on the Committee for a while

Hi Sandy, a quick search of the Minutes of the AGM page 33/42 confirms FFF
"Item (o) on your agenda is the place of the Grand Match. Firstly thanks to Jim Paterson. He
convenes this very active committee and he has told me to tell you that the Grand Match will be held
at Piper Dam near Dundee or Loch Leven on a date to be determined by the weather."

Thanks gm. Doesn't look too hopeful after the recent reports on the Forum. There is good black ice on the Millport Pond and with a bit of luck we will Curl for at least the next three days - on Sunday it is hoped to hold the Dumfries Cup match against Bute - a competition which my grandfather played in (and won) the first time it was ever played (1932?) and I am optimistic that my son, also Alexander like his great grandfather, will be able to take part. If anyone is passing feel free to drop in

There's something wrong here. Please, GM, when was this statement made? A decision predecided. Why? The world should stop, if Lake of Menteith can host a Grand Match, why not? Of course, I have no guarantee that there is sufficient ice there, I'm only asking why everyone in authority is absolutely hell-bent on staging this at Loch Leven or Piper Dam, predecided. Answers please, I'll be back tomorrow.....

As long as I can remember, there has been an item on the RCCC AGM Agenda every year to fix the place(s) of the Grand Match. This is noted in the verbatim minutes printed in the Annual every year. It appears to have been in 2002 that the Lake of Menteith was removed from that list. At the 2002 AGM, the possible places listed were Stormont Loch, Loch Leven, Lindores Loch, Piper Dam, and Loch Morlich.
At the 2001 AGM, these five venues were listed PLUS Lake of Menteith.
The 2002 Annual does not seem to contain any explanation why the LoM was removed as a possible venue at that time. There may be something, but it doesn't jump out at me. No doubt there was a good reason for the Grand Match Committee to have made the decision.

John, 2009 AGM. From the RCCC home page hover over the 'about us' tab and then click on AGM tab to access item 1 (the AGM minutes) opens as a pdf.

Thanks, GM. Now I am REALLY confused. The committee made a decision many moons ago that it was to be Piper Dam (untried) or Loch Leven (uncertain, and the ripples come free). As many suggest, parking, access, F&B and local farmers are problems at LoM, so obviously it was a difficult decision to make. But the one they made makes no sense, because it says: IF Loch Leven EVER freezes well enough, it will be suitable for a Grand Match. And IF it is not suitable, there's always Piper Dam.
May I point out to the committee that there is a loch just down the hill from me, eminently suitable, friendly farmers and all, and it freezes really well. Only one problem: they drained the water from it fifty years ago.....
There are quite a few frozen lakes in Canada, though, just ask the Ice Road Truckers to take the day off!
Personally I fail to see why Loch Leven and Piper Dam should be on the list, but no other places, and especially Lake of Menteith. As FFF says, run the buses from Stirling, get organised. No swipe at Jim Paterson or anyone else here, they all know far more than I do, but the current determination to turn Kinross into the curling mecca of the nation against so much evidence and with so much money they don't have, is causing serious concern.

I don't like blaming individuals especially when they are not here to defend themselves but Jim Paterson as convenor and the whole Grand Match committee have to be held accountable for what seems to me is a completely farcical situation. I have never curled outside and would love the opportunity to do so in the grand match, and I fear that if we let this opportunity slip by then I may never have the chance again. To absorb £2500 every year in administration for an event that does not take place is in itself ridiculous but maybe it would be excusable if we knew that when weather permitted the Grand Match would actually take place. What is the point in my club paying an annual fee for this match when indeed we are not grabbing at the chance when it is here. We may never see a freeze for as long as this again...

again i do not want to second guess the committee, but it does seem odd that they have cut their options from 6 or 7 lochs down to 2 - surely given our weather and the localised nature of it , their options should be kept open. Again i could think of a few other lochs not mentioned by HGW that could be used and would increase the chance of staging the event - loch morlich at Aviemore springs to mind - hard frosts, heaps of access and parking and a diver pal tells me its only a couple of metres deep.
When we get a spell like this - they should be able to think on their feet and just get the job done!
I'm with disco dave - if we dont get it this year with the current spell and the forecast for next week,
we never will
. The last time i curled outside i was 16 - some 24 years ago.

Now ~ Where's the Brewery ~ I'm off to join the Piss-up ~ Whoops.
Complete farce ~ maybe it's the wrong kind of Ice ~ or the wrong time of year ~ every Curler in Scotland should know about this, there should be speculation, as to where it will be held, on the Radio and TV. The RCCC is missing one of the best "free" publicity possibilities in years.

Don't expect an answer on the RCCC site just yet -- it's crashed again!
Very, very good point from Wee Eddie, though. One Grand Match and EVERYBODY will know about curling!

In my previous post I mentioned the 'possibility' of the problems of access. This was only something that rang a bell. but since that date I beleive the Lake of Monteith Hotel has changed hands (agian it rings a bell about Nick Narn being interested in it). But the venue has been TRIED and TESTED.
.
Look at the history -- last two GM's at Lake of Monteith ('63 and '79) Previous at Loch Leven in '59. Previously most held at Carsebreck (12 GM's from 1892 to1935.
Piper Dam may have all the facilties parking, toilets and low level access ect. but can it really take the GM. And as I have already said I was told by Ian Turnbull that the Loch Leven tended to have ripples on it, Due to its size and exposure to wind. May be the new ice rink there could take the water from the loch and save money on cooling. Could cause JM to rethink filtration and ice colour. Nothing like a few prize brown trout under the curling ice!
