Here is the league table as of 11 March AM.

Rank     Team            To Play         Games      W    L
1            Canada        (USA)              8          7     1          Q
2            Denmark      (NOR SCO)      7           5     2
2            USA              (CAN CHN)     7           5     2
4            Sweden        (SCO SUI)       7           4     3
5            Norway         (DEN)             8           4     4
6            China           (GER USA)(      7           3     4
6            Scotland       (SWE DEN)      7           3     4
6            Switzerland   (RUS SWE)      7           3     4
9            Russia          (SUI GER)        7           2     5
10          Germany      (CHN RUS)       7            0     7

Scotland need to win both their games to get to 5 and 4.  It is helpful to their cause that both the teams they play are currently above them in the table - if they win those games, they bring SWE and DEN back down towards them in the chasing pack.

My brain hurts at this point, but I am not sure that 4 and 5 might even get to a play-off as well - assuming lots of things happening?

Yes G83 they can reach a playoff with 4 wins....with the following criteria:

Scotland beat Sweden & Lose to Denmark
Sweden then lose to Switzerland (unlikely)
China lose to USA (likely) OR Germany (unlikely)
Sui lose to Russia (unlikely)
Norway lose to Denmark (possible)

That would leave 5 teams on 4 wins (sco, swe, nor, china & Sui).

I wonder what odds you would get for that scenario?

If Scotland win both their games they are guaranteed a play-off (possibly with 6 teams on 5 wins!!!) and only Canada clear. Lots of possiblities. Good luck to them.

Basically, if Scotland lose to Sweden we're out. We could scrape a playoff if we then beat Denmark and all the other results go our way. So Scotland v Sweden later today is crucial for the boys.

Sorry, my mistake. If we lose to Sweden we are out...no playoffs.

hi everyone, just wanted to say that, i have been a lurker on here for a while but just signed up today literally 10 minutes ago.

okay so i just also wantedto say i think that scotland has a great shot at making the playoffs. Given the events last night and how they have performed against the better teams i would not count on sweden being there though on this evidence :
1. they got lucky to beat the united states ( better team )
2. they got hammered by canada in a game they were never really in and gave up a 3 in the 7th end ( better team )
3. they lost to norway by giving up 3 in the 10th end ( better team )
4. they lost to denmark in a game they should have won by giving up a steal of 3 in the 10th end ( better team )
sweden really has only beat the worse teams and they struggled against china and the game against germany really should have been over sooner condisering they got 6 in the second end. Looking at the games they lost they gave up 3 late in the game all 3 times and have been outscored in the back half of every game they played minus the games against russia and germany. so i wouldnt put it past them to lose to swtizerland and scotland.

my predicted finishes:

canada = 7-2
united states/denmark = 6-3
scotland/switzerland = 5-4
sweden/norway= 4-5
china/russia= 3-6
germany=0-9

Thanks Voila for working out the possibilities - I had been struggling to do it this morning. Welcome to Manitobacurlfan, but your maths has gone awry somewhere as the total wins don't match the total losses (should be 45 each side). Anyone see where the mistake might be?

It would be great if the results work out as you've calculated for the Scots though!

Well done but lets not get carried away. Two of the hardest games next and two defeats could put us back down there with the Russians and a fight to keep the place. Good luck tho!

thanks.
working this out i'll see if i can fox it, so here's how i think it will go :

canada ( lose to united states ) = 7-2
united states ( beat canada and china ) = 7-2 , this is probably the mistake
denmark ( beat norway, lose to scotland ) = 6-3
scotland ( beat sweden and denamrk ) = 5-4
sweden ( lose to switzerland and scotland ) = 4-5
norway ( lose to denmark ) = 4-5
switzerland ( lose to russia, beat sweden ) = 4-5
russia ( beat switzerland and germany ) = 4-5
china ( beat germany, lose to united states ) = 4-5
germany ( lose to russia and china) = 0-9

so i think i fixed things and i changed things around. if this does happen which i think it can because for the last 3 years at this point i have predicted final 4 who gets sent to relegation with germany?

oh and i'm also curious what does everyone else thing about sweden/ do you think i'm right and they'll finish like i think?

Morning from Vancouver.

I can confirm the teams do get your emails, G83 many thanks for your kind words of support in your communication received.

The comments above are all noted and are somewhat unhelpful in certain instances.

Just remember these are young teams who do read the postings on these forums, even from Vancouver, you guys have a responsibility in team dynamics from afar also!

We will take it on the chin and move onto the Sweden game.

like i said i wouldnt count on a loss to sweden, they fall aprt in the back half of games having been outscored 30-19 and given up 3 in all of tier losses in the back half, this comes at a time when soctland has gotten 3 in the back half of their games twice in a row. So even if they keep things close for the first 5 they will follow suit in the last 5.

No, qualification for next year is safe, and well done to Graeme and the team for accomplishing that - their first stated objective. Because the event is in Switzerland next year, as we have just recently found out, only one European team is relegated this time and only one team comes in to next year's lineup from the EJCC. This is all set out in the WCF rulebook which can be found here:

If I have understood everything correctly if Russia loses last two games, and Germany wins its two games, then there would have to be a tiebreaker to decide who goes down. One of these games is Rus v Ger. So Germany has to beat Russia twice to stay up, (as well as winning their game against China, and assuming Russia loses to Switzerland).

All to play for at both ends of the table! Wish I was there this year.

Aehm does anyone know, will they be playing page-playoff or "classic" semi-finals at the junior worlds?

They are Pages, exactly the same as for the Men's and Women's Championships.

It's all in the WCF Rulebook, on the WCF website.
