Stolen, with thanks to Bob's blog, and the RCCC web site.
On Friday 4th September,  a chance to see an exhibition match between the GB Olympic squad skipped by David Murdoch and the Scottish Wheelchair Champs skipped by Jim Taylor. Starts at 1.00 pm and will be followed at around 2.30 by a Come & Try for Wheelies.

This looks like a great initiative.

Forum members might like to consider persuading their clubs to run a "Come and Try" session during or immediately after the Olympics.  With the exception of the late night recorded highlights package that the BBC put out after the Scottish Championships have been and gone, this will be the sport's only exposure on "terrestrial" TV this season - or indeed any season until the next Olympics four years down the line.  The finals are in February, so clubs have a chance to catch and snare some new members before the season is out.

I remember McWomble bemoaning the fact that it was difficult for him to  find someone interested in giving him a chance to play the game; it would be criminal were we to miss the chance next year.

No use moaning about the rising age profile of the game etc etc if we are not going to do something about it!  Actions speak louder... etc etc!

This time the RCCC have beaten you to it!!!  a whole Winter Olympic Come & Try programme has been organised to run between 1st and 7th March 2010 to capitalise on the publicity generated by the event and by RCCC initiatives. Nearer the time i think you will begin to see info appear in the rinks and on the RCCC web site, and anywhere else that is prepared to give us a bit of exposure

Aye - good call.

It will be up to the clubs to make themselves known and see if they can't get some new members to swell their playing ranks.  Too often these initiatives die on the vine of club apathy.

Currie and Balerno is running a "come and try" night just after the ladies final.  I suppose that it will be publicised in the local press.  Even if you only hook two or three new members - that's two or three more than none.

I suppose that those of we members involved in the night will be known hereafter as "hookers".

The actual link is here:

(Not to be confused with other 'bob's blogs' which you find if you do a Google, or alternative, search for these words!)

I, along with other club members have tried to get new members in past and people usually say 'oh yes yes, that looks interesting!' etc etc, but then they never do anything about it.
I've never come across any potential wheelchair players though.

As as far as the Winter Olympic thing goes, yes, it's a great idea, but, is it just me, or would it have been better if the games had been late on in '09?? I mean, by the time they happen, it will almost be the end of the season!!
Of course, I doubt that the planners were thinking about that when they arranged the dates!!

As an aside
When I started, the club put an advert in the local paper, and I was the only person who responded. ONE!
Even at that I have to put my hands up and say that I never responded immediately, I had clocked the details in the advert and I took a few weeks to do something, but I did, nonetheless, turn up at Braehead one day and asked to speak to anyone from Dumbarton or at least get details. Luckily people were there and the rest is history. I imagine I must have been a bit of a surprise for them, suddenly appearing out of the blue without any warning like that, but there you go, at least I did it, plenty of others never do.
Before I knew it, I was substituting for what seemed almost every week!!   Cheesy
